A few years back the town where I live, Cairns, was caught up in the depths of the GFC. We had the highest unemployment rate in Australia, businesses both large and small were failing at an unprecedented and alarming rate and the mood was less than positive to say the least. I wanted to do something about it.
So I got some friends together, we put on a free public event called “BE INSPIRED”. We attracted almost 500 business owners to come and listen and we did our utmost to inspire them, to encourage them and to reassure them that things would get better. Our main message was that now is the time to get ready, because after every downturn comes an upturn and if we sit crying in our coffee, we will miss the opportunity ahead.
It was a great success and I was really proud of what we achieved. I really do think we turned the mood of the city around, or at least started to push it in the right direction. I personally received hundreds of calls, emails and social media posts thanking my team for their efforts, which made me feel very satisfied. Then I got an anonymous email that shattered me.
