Angus and Robertson Franchise Conference

Tuesday, September 16th, 2008

Many thanks to the Angus and Robertson Management team and the delightful group of franchise owners who attended the National Conference at Tangalooma Resort last week. I had a ball presenting my ideas to you all and it was fabulous to be able to get to know some of you better. Having a conference on Tangalooma was a stroke of genius and it certainly added to what was clearly a fantastic few days. I look forward to working with you again sometime in the near future. Please feel free to drop me a line if you have any business issues you would like to discuss or to give any feedback regarding my presentation.

Kindest regards,

Andrew

The grass is always greener or is it?

Monday, September 8th, 2008

I get to meet many business owners who seem to have lost the passion for their business. They have the perception that every other business is better than theirs – by this I mean every other businesses is easier to run, more profitable, less time consuming, less stressful and generally far more appealing than the business they currently own and run.

Apart from being wrong, the “grass is greener” mentality can make a business implode simply because the business owner spends all of their time finding fault rather than fixing issues.

From my experience, there is no such thing as an easy business to run. I have seen so many people buy a restaurant or coffee shop because they think it will be a breeze whereas in fact, food really is tough. If you don’t think so watch one episode of “Hell’s Kitchen” with Gordon Ramsy and that should be enough to scare even the most sane person away from any thought of running a restaurant.

There are times when we all forget about the things we really love about our business. The freedom it gives us, the satisfaction we get from a job well done, the people we work with, our relationships with our customers and the blood sweat and tears that have gone into doing something we are really proud of. It is nice to be reminded of the things we love about our business rather than the things that bug us.

To do this we really need to take some time out and think about our business and what it really means to us. At the same time, think through the “dream” business that you think will be so wonderful. Be honest, be realistic. You may come to the conclusion that you really want is what you already have.

I love keynote speaking and I am very active in generating more jobs of this nature. But one day I was thinking about what it would be like to do 2 or 3 keynote jobs a week. Sure the money would be good but what would my life be like? I can tell you it would be a blur of airports, taxis, hotels, big rooms filled with a never ending sea of people, bad coffee and not much time left for my family or friends. So I limit how much keynote work I do for this reason.

Maybe all your business needs is a little tweaking to make it closer to being perfect for you. If after doing all of the above you still think the other business is what you want – well go for it. But be careful what you wish for.

Cheers,

AG

New AG website and blog

Saturday, September 6th, 2008

Today I officially launch my new website and blog. It has been quite a task to get there, and like most IT projects now that it is finished I am ready to start again. I have endeavored to make both the blog and the website bright and colourful, with much more current information and easier to navigate features. I did get a quite a bit of feedback on my last website that it was a little dark and foreboding  - those people who know me or who have been to one of my events, say that this image didn’t really represent me accurately. Now I am taking that as a compliment (even if it wasn’t meant as one) insinuating that I am much brighter and more colourful than my previous “dark night” or “joker” images showed.

Please take a few moments to browse this blog and the new website. If you have some feedback I would love to hear it. You can post a comment on this blog or email me via the website

I would like to say thank you to the City of Cairns team – my web developers for this project. They have gone way above and beyond the call of duty and that means a lot to me. So thank you to Nicky and Kaj and your IT Army.

Kindest regards,

AG

Tropical Writers Festival a big success

Monday, September 1st, 2008

Well the inaugural Tropical Writers Festival went off without a hitch on the weekend. Hundreds of people attended from throughout North Queensland to sit in on the various panels, workshops and events that were held over the 2 days. The guest of honor was fiction writer – Nick Earls. He provided a number of entertaining presentations and a workshop that was sold out. Writers of all genres attended the festival, some professional, some experienced, some just starting out.

It was stimulating on every level and an absolute credit to the Tropical Writers Group who put a huge amount of hard work into making it such a professional event.

I am sure that this will become a regular feature on our literary calendar. As this first festival was so successful I can only imagine how it will grow in coming years.

Many thanks to everyone who attended and to the Tropical Writers Group for all of the hard work you have done to make the festival a wonderful two day experience.

Warm wishes,

Andrew
