Small Business owners in Queensland – BE WARNED.

Tuesday, January 31st, 2012

In a few months we will be having an election in Queensland. In fact we will be having both a state and local government election and Small Business owners should be warned. I am certainly not advocating or supporting any particular political party but I am saying very clearly that if Small Business owners don’t take these elections seriously we will get what we deserve.

In the last Federal Budget, the Government showed a complete lack of understanding of the needs of Small Business. The best they could come up with was a $5000 tax break if the business owner went further into debt by buying a vehicle valued at $35,000 or more. That was about it. I looked long and hard for any cutting edge, innovative, realistic initiatives, but there were none. Small Business owners take heed – we are the risk of this happening again if we don’t start asking some tough questions.

I strongly suggest that as the political parties start making promises about all of the things they will do when elected to power, Small Business owners need to be asking some hard questions. We need to know what every party policy will be for Small Business – and this needs to be spelt out in black and white, not political mumbo jumbo or vague statements about economic development. We want some very specific commitments long before we are ticking a ballot paper.

Small Business has the potential to have a big voice, but most of us are too busy doing what we do or too cynical to get caught up in the political world. But it has to be said, if we don’t speak up and ask the question “what EXACTLY will you do for Small Business if you are elected?” and vote accordingly, we get what we deserve.

So I send out a request to every Small Business owner in Queensland – whenever you get the chance, ask the candidates the tough questions. Push them for answers, don’t accept rhetoric around “broad economic development initiatives”. Don’t let local council candidates out answering tough questions around Small Business either. If they don’t have some strategies to help Small Business grow and develop, they are out of touch. In places like Cairns, close to 90% of all businesses are Small Business. If a Council doesn’t have committed resources, personnel, specific activities, resources and an overall strategy to help these businesses, they don’t take them seriously.

Make an informed decision regarding whom you vote for and the long term future of your Small Business based on their level of commitment. Please encourage other Small Business owners to do the same.

Thank you,

Andrew Griffiths

RUOK? Well today is the day to reach out and ask.

Thursday, October 7th, 2010

Today may just be the day where you reach out and save a life. To find out more take a moment to listen to Hugh Jackman.

RUOK?

Tuesday, August 10th, 2010

Last year I met Graeme Cowan, the man behind RUOK? DAY – and I was immediately moved by his message. I did my utmost to spread the message last year and I will again this year. There may be someone closer to you than you realise who is suffering from some form depression, particularly in light of the financial challenges of the past 18 months. Reach out and ask those who you instinctively know may need some help – and then reach out to the others just in case. To find out more please read the following.

RUOK DAY – October 7, 2010

Is there someone close to you who has experienced stress, depression or anxiety? If you are like 87% of Australians, you will know someone is this situation.

This year RUOK? Day is on Thursday October 7. On this day Australians are encouraged to reach out to someone they are concerned about and ask “Are you OK?”. A conversation could change a life.

Last year, post RUOK? Day research showed that over 650,000 conversations took place, and we are confident that this will be greatly increased this year.

For those interested in their workplace participating, a group has been set up to discuss lessons from last year, and share ideas for making this year even bigger.

RUOK? Day is about stopping small problems becoming big problems.

The group is called “R U OK? Day (7th October 2010)”

Please consider joining this group and adding your ideas.
Kind Regards
Graeme

R U OK? Day (7th October 2010)

According to a recent Medicare Private report, stress and low mood account for 33% of lost productivity in Australia. This presenteeism(employees at work, but not fully functioning) and absenteeism are directly costing Australian employers $10.11b per year.

Since the report 2 years ago, workplace counselling for anxiety and stress has increased 68% and 76% respectively (Davidson Trahaire Corpsych, Australia’s largest EAP provider). Despite this extraordinary situation, only 9% of people with mood disorders feel comfortable discussing it with their work colleagues… R U OK? Day was first created to help break down this stigma and build more supportive and engaged communities and work environments.

By simply starting a conversation with someone who might be doing it tough, you can make a difference. It’s about preventing small problems becoming big problems. In it’s first year (2009) 1.3 million Australians – and 300 businesses – took part with over 650,000 conversations held. R U OK? Day 2010 invites employees to dedicate a small amount of time on the 7th October to contact anyone in their lives who may be struggling and to ask R U OK? Everything required to take part is free and available on www.ruokday.com.au

Ultimately it’s about helping to reduce Australia’s shockingly high suicide rate by simply connecting with others and asking R U OK? Over 2,500 Australians take their lives every year and up to 15 times that attempt suicide. R U OK? Day is not about raising money – It’s about creating the environment for – and improving – emotional support and saving lives.

This LinkedIn group will focus on working with the Human Resources community in Australia in an effort to raise awareness of – and participation in – R U OK?Day on the 7th October 2010. Questions about R U OK? in general, or R U OK?Day on the 7th October can be directed to Paul Di Michiel at email: pdimichiel@yahoo.com).

Give Generously to the Red Shield Appeal – 2010

Sunday, May 30th, 2010

This weekend is the official Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal. The fundraising event aims to raise almost $10 million Australia wide. People will be door knocking, setting up stalls in shopping centres and rattling the tin at events.

The Salvation Army makes a huge difference to the lives of hundreds of thousands of people around Australia and they need our help. So please give generously.

I will be at the Edge Hill Shops in Cairns collecting money today. If you are close by, drop in and say hello. If you are out and about anywhere else in the country and you see Red Shield Fundraiser, or if one comes knocking on your door, please do what you can to help them. You never know, one day you might be the one in need.

Thanks,
Andrew
