Bring on the 2012 Tropical Innovation Awards in Cairns.

Friday, May 11th, 2012

We are just about to announce the launch of the 2012 Tropical Innovation Awards in Cairns. This is a big event, in its third year and something that I just love being involved in.

Every year we get some truly inspirational innovators showcasing their creations. Some are just in the conceptual stages, others are making money from what they have invented. Regardless, the depth of the talent in the innovation world of Tropical North Queensland is incredible.

A big part of any awards programme is sponsorship and raising loot for the 2102 TIA is my job. Our gala event is huge, with about 300 business leaders attending, but we are really aiming to showcase all of our sponsors in the 7 month build up to the November event ceremony.

To find out more about the awards, check out the following link. If your organisation is a good fit, why not become a sponsor? We will work tirelessly to ensure that you get great recognition and excellent value for money for your sponsorship dollars.

The sponsorship info is on the site, but you can also drop me a line for more information.

Finally a flying car. But would you want one?

Thursday, April 19th, 2012

Well we’ve all felt just a little ripped off that the flying cars we were promised when watching cartoons as kids haven’t materialised. But maybe they are finally here. This prototype car come ultra light looks pretty impressive and the Dutch company behind the creation is looking to start commercial production in the near future. Would you buy one? I’m sure there are plenty of people that would.

Seth Godin talks about broken thinking….

Thursday, April 12th, 2012

This is a great TED video from the one and only Seth Godin. Why are there so many dumb things out there? Why do people do dumb things when doing business? Why is there so much broken thinking? This video is a few years old, but I don’t think there is any less “broken” out there. A very funny look into the world of broken as only Seth could deliver.

In Japan, Lastel is a hotel that stores dead bodies in refrigerated coffins.

25th January 2012 in Health & Wellbeing.

We’ve seen hotels for dogs, new divorcees, and now in Japan — in response to the problem of over-crowding in crematoriums — there’s Lastel, a hotel for dead bodies. The death rate in Japan is on the rise, with an average of 23,000 more people dying each year over the past decade, according to a reportby Reuters. The result is an average waiting time of four days for a crematorium. Owner Hisayoshi Teramura says Lastel — located in the suburbs of Japan’s second largest city, Yokohama — offers families an alternative to keeping bodies in their home, with refrigerated coffins available to rent for JPY 12,000 or USD 157 per day. The hotel currently accommodates 18 “guests”. An automated storage system delivers coffins through hatches and into a viewing room, so friends and families can pay their respects to the deceased until there is space in the crematorium.

Planning permission for crematoriums in Japan is reportedly difficult, so a hotel for corpses is a practical answer to a growing need. Also, unlike the US, no license is required to work in the “death” industry. So while this hotel may mark a departure from traditional death rituals, it does offer a practical solution to a very real problem, and could well lead to a string of copy-cat establishments being set up in Japan’s congested cities.
